What’s a topic or issue about which you’ve changed your mind?
We often think we have everything figured out. We cling to our beliefs and routines, assuming that our perspectives are set in stone. But, if there’s one thing travel teaches us, it’s that change is inevitable – and sometimes, it’s the very thing we need.
I used to believe that stability was everything. A steady job, a predictable schedule, and clear goals made me feel in control. But all that changed when I set off on a long-term journey abroad. In that experience, I discovered how travel can radically shift our perspectives, opening up new ways of thinking we never imagined before.
The Security of Routine
Like many, I found comfort in routine. Stability was my security blanket, and I thought this was the only way to thrive. Weekdays were for work, weekends for rest, and vacations meant a short escape to return refreshed to the same rhythm. It felt safe, predictable. But the more I traveled, the more I realized how limiting this mindset had become.
When I packed up for my first extended trip overseas, it wasn’t a decision I took lightly. I wanted to see the world, yes, but there was a fear of leaving behind the known. That fear lingered even as I boarded the plane. What would happen to my career? What if things didn’t go as planned? Looking back, I realize that my desire for control had been holding me back from truly experiencing life.
The Shift Begins
My first few weeks of travel were an adjustment. I remember sitting in a café in Bali, sipping on coconut water, watching surfers catch waves. For the first time in a while, I wasn’t thinking about deadlines or next steps. I was simply present. There was something incredibly liberating about waking up each day with no strict plans, only the possibility of discovery.
As I immersed myself in new cultures, met people from diverse backgrounds, and embraced the unpredictability of travel, I started questioning the very things I had once prioritized. Why had I always equated success with the traditional path? Why did I feel guilty for slowing down, for not adhering to the “grind” culture?
Embracing the Unknown
Travel exposes you to the unexpected – missed flights, spontaneous detours, the kindness of strangers, and even discomfort. But these moments helped me see the beauty in flexibility. What I once viewed as a setback became an opportunity. A delayed flight in Morocco turned into a chance to explore an unplanned village, meeting locals who shared stories that left a lasting impression on me. A canceled tour in Thailand gave me time to wander, leading me to a quiet temple that became one of the highlights of my trip.
I began to embrace the uncertainty of travel, and in doing so, I embraced the uncertainty of life itself. The need to have everything planned, every goal perfectly mapped out, suddenly didn’t seem as crucial. The joy of discovery, of allowing life to unfold, became the lesson I didn’t know I needed.
A New Mindset
When I returned home, I felt different. No longer was I obsessed with a rigid timeline for my future. Travel had taught me that there’s more to life than climbing a corporate ladder or following society’s expectations of success. There’s value in experiences, in taking risks, and in being open to change.
I had shifted from prioritizing stability to prioritizing growth – personal growth, that is. And ironically, this shift led to greater fulfillment. My career didn’t crumble when I stepped away for a while. Instead, I returned with fresh perspectives, new ideas, and a sense of clarity that I had lacked before.
How Travel Can Change You
Travel pushes you out of your comfort zone. It challenges your beliefs, exposes you to new ideas, and forces you to confront the parts of yourself you’ve long kept hidden. For me, it was the realization that I had been living according to a script that wasn’t truly my own.
So, if there’s an issue you’re grappling with or a belief you’re questioning, consider stepping out of your routine and into the unknown. Whether it’s a trip across the globe or a weekend away, travel has a way of breaking down the barriers we build around our minds. It frees us from the constraints of our daily lives and offers a fresh perspective on what truly matters.
In the end, the most transformative journeys aren’t just about discovering new places. They’re about discovering new parts of yourself.
So, where will your next adventure take you? And more importantly, how will it change you?
